While Phuket may be known for its luxury resorts and beach clubs, there are still wonderful opportunities for families seeking a more adventurous, nature-oriented experience. Camping in Phuket provides a fantastic way for kids to experience nature while getting some fresh air and sleeping under the stars. Here are some of the top spots where you can take your kids camping on the island.
Situated right next to Phuket International Airport, Nai Yang Beach is part of Sirinath National Park. While it may seem like an unlikely spot to go camping, it's a surprisingly beautiful area. The park has designated camping areas where families can set up tents or rent one on-site. There are flat spots for tents as well as bathrooms and showers. If you don't want to deal with cooking, there are a few restaurants within walking distance that are mostly only open during high season (December -April).
The beachfront has hundreds of casuarina trees supplying plenty of shade. There's snorkeling in shallow water inside the bay and safe areas for swimming. A 20-minute walk north along the beach brings you to the end of the airport runway where you can watch planes land or take off just a few meters above your head.
For nature lovers, Nai Yang is known as a nesting site for sea turtles. If you time your visit right (typically from November to February), you might catch a glimpse of baby turtles hatching and making their way to the sea.
Situated in Kathu not far from Andamanda Water Park, Camping Phuket 88 is a convenient spot to take kids camping. Fronted on a small lake, there are water-based activities for kids to enjoy in a safer environment than the sea.
It's a quiet and serene setting even though it's close to urban areas. The grounds are laid out nicely with lighted pathways and it's not too crowded. They have several sizes of tent available including some cool futurist ones overlooking the lake. An on-site restaurant further simplifies things making it a cushy camping experience where you don't have to have much of your own camping gear.
While this relatively new camping area perched on top of a steep mountain might not be safe for young children, the location and views are unmatched by any other campgrounds in Phuket.
Located in the south of the island, you probably won't want to drive to this spot unless you have a capable 4x4. But don't worry, there is parking at the beginning of the dirt road and there are shuttles available to deliver you to the site. Due to the uneven terrain, they have constructed platforms for tents and the view out over the Andaman and south towards Promthep Cape, Koh Racha, and surrounding islands is mind-blowing. Tents are provided and there are only four spots so call ahead. They have drinks and refreshments, but no proper restaurant so come prepared. Restrooms with showers are available and the good-natured owner is always around making everyone feel welcome.
