Ways to Continue Learning in Phuket

We humans with our giant brains are built for learning. With kids, it’s immediately evident as they’re constantly searching out some type of intellectual stimulation. Perhaps some of us get a bit more lackadaisical as we age in terms of learning new things. However, there are many good reasons to keep those neurons firing. While it’s tempting to plop down on a postcard-perfect beach in Phuket with a mai tai and simply watch the world go by, your poor atrophied brain will shrivel up like a raisin. Whether you’re an expat, digital nomad, or long-term visitor, there are countless opportunities to pick up new skills, explore hobbies, and keep your brain in shape.

Happen to be a science geek? If so, or even if you just have a passing interest, you’re in luck. If you’re keen to see and learn a bit about marine critters, Phuket has two aquariums: the Phuket Aquarium at Cape Panwa and Aquaria on the bottom floor of Central Floresta. Both are worth a visit, with the former having viewable feedings at 11 am daily, and the latter having some cool species you might not expect. Additionally, Berda Claude International School (BCIS) in Chalong has a planetarium that hosts a range of events and presentations about life and the cosmos – most of which are free, open to the public, and suited to all curious minds.

Another fascinating topic that many visitors, and especially expats, pursue is the history of Phuket. From tantalizing hints at the region in ancient texts dating back nearly 2000 years, to its tin mining boom and subsequent wave of Chinese immigrants, to its modern iteration, there’s a lot there to unpack. Fortunately, the island boasts a handful of museums that help tell the story, including the Phuket Mining Museum, Thai Hua Museum, the Peranakan Museum, the Thavorn Phuket Museum, and the Thalang National Museum, which displays the oldest archaeological evidence of human habitation on the island.

Maybe you’re a music lover? If so, there are numerous resources to help you along that path. Check out music schools like the Phuket Music Academy or Phuket Academy of Performing Arts, which offer lessons in woodwinds, piano, guitar, drums, and more. Here, you cannot only learn instruments, but also meet other musicians to play and network with, and even find a platform to play professionally. Plus, there are several shops around the island selling a variety of instruments, amplifiers, and accessories to support you on the journey.

A key component of Thai culture is the predominant Buddhist beliefs and practices. For those who have, or may develop, an interest in the spiritual side of Thai culture, Phuket has options to learn more. For example, the Bodhidhammayan Retreat Phuket focuses on Buddhist meditation, offering programs from 1 to 4 days. Communication of any kind is prohibited during your time here – no talking, no phones, no internet. While participation is free and they provide very basic accommodation and meals, donations are encouraged. The Dharana Phuket Meditation Center is another option for mentorship and spiritual guidance.
