For those who make the big decision to move to Phuket, one of the most challenging choices to make is where to live. It’s an island, so there are only so many choices, but it’s large enough to have a wide variety of towns and neighborhoods, each with its own pros and cons. Many areas around Phuket can be a good choice for families, but some will be better than others depending on your specific circumstances, wants, and needs. Families will mostly be seeking the same thing – the right balance of lifestyle, convenience, and community. From proximity to school to safety or access to amenities, the right neighborhood can make a huge difference in your day-to-day life. Fortunately, Phuket offers several excellent areas that are well-suited to families.

Best Areas to Live in Phuket for Families

For expat families, one of the top choices currently is Bang Tao, Pasak, and the nearby Laguna area. While this area isn’t necessarily everyone’s first choice, it would probably win a majority vote. The newer communities are well-planned, international schools are within a reasonable distance, and there are plenty of restaurants and shopping in the surrounding area. Gated estates, parks, and cycling paths make it great for children, while nearby beaches and beach clubs provide convenience for parents. There are plenty of kid-oriented amenities in the area, like kids’ clubs and activities. Another bonus, especially for parents who have to travel often, is that the airport is fairly close. Potential drawbacks of living here are the higher property values and the public infrastructure lagging, especially the roads, resulting in crippling traffic at times.

While many are captured by the allure of the west coast beach towns, those with more practical sensibilities find Chalong appealing. The area has a lot going for it in terms of its central location, proximity to many schools, and its affordability. When it comes to renting or buying a home, your money will go much further in Chalong. For those seeking a more local vibe and prefer a less insulated expat community, this is a great choice. Within easy reach are tons of restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities, water parks, well-regarded international schools, hospitals, and the beach isn’t too far for weekend picnics. You can also find larger homes at more affordable prices here, making it appealing for growing families. Drawbacks of life in Chalong are that many neighborhoods are densely populated, and certain areas flood easily during heavy rains.

Kathu is another region that offers a good balance for families. While marginally less convenient for getting around the island, it offers some quiet corners, less tourist traffic, greater affordability, and a healthy balance of local Thai families and expats.

Another increasingly popular option is Rawai in the south of the island. This area still offers a more relaxed, community-focused lifestyle. Popular among long-term residents, Rawai has a strong expat presence, plenty of trendy cafes and restaurants, and easy access to outdoor activities, and is a great jumping-off point to nearby islands. Families often appreciate the cozier feel and slightly lower cost of living. It’s a great balance between comfort, affordability, and quality of life. On the flipside, this area is farther away from just about everything on the island and is in the midst of a development boom, so it is quickly becoming urbanized.
