For those who are not yet aware, Phuket is, above all else, a tourist destination. The island’s economy is fueled in large part by the millions upon millions of vacationers who flock here each year from all over the globe. Of course this means that the tourism infrastructure is significant and includes everything from resorts/hotels, thousands of restaurants, and a wide range of things to do to keep inquisitive visitors engaged. While peak tourist season can have a downside for permanent residents, it also leaves open the opportunity to take advantage of all the touristy activities.
Perhaps the saving grace of life in Phuket is that there is a very distinct tourism high season which generally stretches from December to March. While some businesses simply shut down for the low season, many do not and offer low season discounts to entice locals. This can be a great opportunity to stay at a 5-star beachfront resort for a fraction of the inflated high season rates. It’s also a great way to splurge on fancy Sunday brunches or spas that are discounted and less crowded.
Taking boat trips out to nearby islands during the off season is another fun activity. Places like Koh Racha and Koh Phi Phi are completely overrun by thousands of tourists during the high season. While the sea can be wild and dangerous at times during the monsoon season (which coincides with the tourist low season), there are many calm days. This is when you can gather a few friends and have a whole speedboat to yourselves, and perhaps even have a world class beach or snorkeling spot with no one around. Be sure to check the weather forecast and choose a time when the winds aren’t too strong.
Phuket’s waterparks are another super fun way to spend a day. While a fun time can still be had during touristy times, you can avoid congestion and lines by visiting during the off-season. Blue Tree has a huge lagoon with paddle boarding, ziplining, cliff jumping, and a slip-and-fly. If you’re more of a waterslide aficionado, check out Andamanda in Kathu. It’s Phuket’s newest waterpark which boasts 32 waterslides, a wave pool, and a 300-room hotel.
Let’s not forget all of the cliche tourist activities sprinkled around the island. There’s everything from mini-golf to laser tag, parasailing to wakeboarding. Phuket is great for families in this regard. Many adults may be happy to gulp down pina coladas by the pool all day, but kids need to be occupied which is why there are a million things to do with kids around the island. For the little ones, look out for kid’s clubs and hands-on workshops, go karts or atvs, and even paragliding or surfing.
Last, but not least, there’s always the option of taking in a show. It’s a basic requirement for anyone living in Phuket to see a drag show like Simon Cabaret or Aphrodite at least once. Other cultural shows like Phuket Fantasea or the hilarious Junkyard Theatre are other good options.
