Originally a tin mining settlement, Phuket Town is situated on the east coast of the island in a well-protected bay facing the mainland at Krabi.
The most densely populated part of the island, Phuket Town has grown from a quiet provincial town to somewhat of small city complete with glittering shopping malls, international standard hospitals, and many other amenities you could expect in a much larger Thai city.
Development in large parts of the town center, often referred to as the Old Town, is restricted due to the large number of protected buildings made up of Sino-Portuguese shophouses and mansions, and therefore most new developments tend to be on the outskirts.
While land prices are comparatively high, most new properties are aimed at the local market. Although in recent years a growing number of modern condominium developments have been popular among both Thai and foreign buyers.
