With its productive tropical waters, many surrounding islands, and underwater features, anglers can do much worse than Phuket. The local old timers will tell you it’s nothing like the good old days when the sea was teeming with life and you could catch big fish from shore. While the commercial fishing industry’s impact on the local marine ecosystem is evident, there is still some pretty great fishing to be had around Phuket. 

Types of Fishing in Phuket

Phuket has a solid reputation for its deep-sea fishing opportunities. Keen anglers ply the waters around the island for prized game fish like sailfish, marlin, tuna, dorado (mahi-mahi), and barracuda. For tourists or those who don’t want the hassle of owning their own boat, there are commercial fishing charters. Most of these outfits are experienced, know the good spots, and will set you up with gear and bait. 

If you want to stay closer to shore, or on the shore, there are plenty of opportunities for reef fishing. You probably won’t catch any giants, but you can have a blast with smaller species like snapper, grouper, and hard-fighting trevally. 

Although saltwater fishing is at the top of the list for the majority of anglers, there are also freshwater fishing options. Several fishing parks with stocked lakes cater to those who want to catch species like arapaima, carp, and catfish. Snakehead fish and other small species can be found in the island’s small ponds and canals. 

Best Fishing Spots in Phuket

While nobody wants to give away their secret fishing spots, it’s well-known that the waters around the Racha Islands are quite lively. Located about 20 kilometers south of Phuket, the strong currents and underwater topography attract a wide range of sea life in large numbers. It’s a hotspot for finding big game fishing with chartered boats cruising around trolling for the big one. 

Well-known for its diving spots, the Similan Islands can also serve up some world-class fishing opportunities. Much of the area is a protected marine park so it’s important to go with a guide who knows where fishing is permitted. 

Phang Nga Bay, known for its stunning limestone cliffs and emerald waters, is also a great spot for a day out on the water fishing. The calm waters provide a different experience compared to the Andaman Sea, but non-fishermen in your group will appreciate the incredible views. 

How To Get Out On the Water

Phuket has a wide range of fishing charter outfits to suit a variety of budgets and levels of experience. They all offer equipment, bait, and experienced guides who know the best fishing spots. Options range from half-day to multi-day trips and some also offer luxurious amenities like gourmet meals and air-conditioned cabins.

Those who want the local experience can hire longtail boats too. While slower and smaller than modern vessels and with less range, they can take you out to Racha and other islands in the region. Some of the owners of longtails are original locals and may know better spots than the bigger charters. 

Other Considerations

When it comes to fishing licenses, they aren’t required for sport fishing. Going with a guide is key as it’s not always clear where fishing is permitted or restricted. The best fishing season in Phuket runs from November to April, during the dry season. You can find good days during the monsoon season, but it’s difficult to plan ahead.
