For many, Phuket’s steamy tropical weather lends itself to light meals and dishes that don’t weigh you down. However, it can be a different story when the monsoon season blows in the rain and cooler weather. For expats, this is an ideal opportunity to indulge in some of the more potentially calorie-rich foods that one might not normally have an appetite for. And since Phuket is blessed with one of the most tantalizing culinary landscapes found anywhere, there are many options to satisfy that craving for rainy day comfort foods.
Many will agree that soups in general are a great option on a cool, rainy evening. Even better is a giant, steaming bowl of Japanese tonkotsu ramen. This specific variety of ramen is defined by its rich, creamy broth created by slowly simmering pork bones for many hours. The hearty udon-like wheat noodles are specially made with alkaline water giving them a satisfyingly firm texture. Try it with kakuni (braised pork belly) and you won’t be disappointed.
This Chalong-based German eatery has been a local favorite for many years now. Housed in a weird boat-like structure, they serve up a selection of homemade, belly-warming dishes ideally suited for a dark and stormy evening. One of the most popular menu items is the beef stroganoff with housemade spaetzle (a type of egg noodle). While its provenance is complicated (created by a Russian in France and loved in Germany), the rich, brown mushroom sauce and generous portions of tender beef make it a crowd pleaser. The schnitzel and Hungarian goulash are also popular.
While most people don’t need an excuse to enjoy some Italian food, it’s certainly near the top of the list for rainy day comfort food. This classy joint with great service and food to match is in a great location with easy parking in Cherng Talay. You can't go wrong with one of the nearly 20 pizza options, however, a steaming hot bowl of pasta may be more fitting. Those fond of truffles will be in their happy place with the tagliatelle truffle or gnocchi truffle or those who prefer to stick with classics will enjoy the puttanesca alla napoli. We’d be doing a disservice not to mention Five Olives’ steaks, and if you want to get a table it’s best to book ahead as this spot is no secret.
For those who dwell in the south of the island, this trendy little eatery near Nai Harn Lake is a gem. With a unique Mexican/American-inspired menu, there are plenty of options perfectly suited to a blustery (by Phuket standards) evening. One can absolutely not go wrong with the birria grilled cheese which is a towering sandwich on sourdough stuffed with slow cooked beef and cheese with a piping hot bowl of beef consomme for dipping. Or for a slight variation, the birria stew with tortillas and salsas. If you’re feeling more surf than turf, the battered and fried crispy baja tacos will warm even the coldest of hearts.
