At first glance, Phuket can look just like the postcards – an island paradise. As a result of a strong tourism industry and booming economy, there is much affluence and fairly high standard of living for many. However, that’s not the case for all and many people are disadvantaged for one reason or another. Children are especially vulnerable and sometimes become orphans, victims of broken homes, economic hardship, parents with drug or alcohol abuse issues, or may be marginalized because of their ethnicity. Phuket has plenty of resources to go around, but oftentimes those who might be happy to help simply don’t know where to start. Let’s look at a few ways in which the island’s expats can help.
Supporting Charitable Organizations

Fortunately, Phuket’s growing community has people who have offered their selfless generosity to help kids in need. There are several organizations whose sole purpose is to search out resources to provide housing, care, and education, but it is a never-ending mission.
Phuket Sunshine Village is one long-established foundation that has been doing great work for years. They provide all of the necessities for almost 100 kids and rely completely on the generosity of donors as they are not associated with any parent NGO. There are various ways to contribute whether it’s donating everyday necessities or things like toys or school and art supplies. Of course, monetary donations are very important to cover housing, medical, and educational costs. Individuals or businesses can transfer money directly to the foundation or even help host or organize fundraising events. Other charitable initiatives that could use support include the Good Shepherd Thailand, the Phuket Has Been Good To Us Foundation, Seeds of Change Phuket, Asia Center Foundation, Child Watch Phuket, Life Home Project, SOS Phuket Children’s Village, and more.
Donate Time or Expertise

While the charitable organizations have staff that do the best they can, kids don’t often get enough direct attention or have other helpful and influential adults around to guide them. In some ways, volunteering your time to spend with kids is just as valuable as donating money. Even a few hours per month can make a positive impression and instill a feeling of worth. Some organizations also provide the option to sponsor specific kids for various durations.
Even better is if you have a useful skill or expertise that can be taught. For example, one thing that immediately gives any kid in Phuket an advantage is the ability to speak english. Many other activities can be fun, useful, and exciting for them to learn such as swimming, learning an instrument, or hands-on arts craft like painting or sculpting. Becoming a mentor is rewarding for kids and you as well.
Support Beneficial Initiatives
Another more indirect way of helping out the island’s marginalized kids is to take part in events or initiatives that benefit social programs. Sporting events like triathlons and fun runs often donate a portion of the proceeds to charities. Sometimes other events like concerts, conferences, gala dinners, or auctions use their platforms to raise awareness and support for social programs or charitable foundations.
