Guide to Planning Extended Time Away from Phuket
Tips for Being Away From Phuket For An Extended Period of Time

As the saying goes, “life happens”. And as an expat residing in Phuket, this can sometimes equate to having to be off-island for an extended period of time. Some may have to do this for work on a regular planned basis, while others may visit their home country periodically. Regardless of the reason, there are a number of considerations to keep in mind when the time comes. Better yet, devise a contingency plan ahead of time with a list of your specific priorities and responsibilities to minimize stress.

Avoid Disaster

There are numerous things that can go wrong with your condo or house. When this happens when you’re there, you can deal with it yourself or find someone who can help, but being out of town complicates things considerably. Perhaps the best way to avoid problems is to think of the worst-case scenario and plan accordingly. In most cases, this will come in the form of a fire or flood.

If you’ll be gone for weeks or months, switching off the power for your entire house at the main electrical panel is the best option. If your water comes from a well then this also solves the problem of flooding as your water pump won’t have power. A leaking or burst pipe can flood your house with the water pump running until someone intervenes or the well runs dry.

Should the electricity have to stay on, it’s a good idea to at least unplug all electrical devices as much as possible. The same goes for your home’s water supply – if there are multiple valves, shut off the supply wherever it’s not needed.

Storage

If you have to leave for many months or more, clearing out your personal items and renting your place while you’re gone might be a good option. There are a few options for this in Patong, Cherng Talay, and Chalong. Prices vary but expect to pay around THB 2,000/month for a small storage unit. Conveniently, some facilities offer other services like delivery or even international shipping should those services be needed.

Long-term parking for vehicles is available at lots at and near the airport. Keep in mind that parking a vehicle for months without starting it can be problematic, especially in Phuket’s tropical climate. If possible, have someone start the vehicle every two weeks, or if not disconnect the battery.

Daily Life

It’s also crucial to cover your bases in all of your day-to-day affairs. If your home is empty, you need to have someone pay your electricity bill. If you wish to maintain your Thai phone number, you will need to pay a small amount monthly so it is not canceled. The road tax on your vehicle needs to be paid yearly or it will lapse resulting in penalties.

Let’s not forget about immigration and visa issues. Depending on your type of visa, you may need to acquire a re-entry stamp. Check all of the expiry dates on official documents whether it be related to your visa, work permit, or company.

As an expat in Phuket, it’s inevitable that you’ll have to be out of the country at some point, for some period of time. It will be to your great benefit to plan ahead for when this time comes as it will likely save you time, money, and hassle in the future.
